What to Wear to a Casting Call – Ravena Bailey

Casting calls can be pretty intimidating and choosing what to wear can become very stressful. Here are some outfit ideas to wear to your next casting call!

This is what I wore to my most recent casting call. It’s a simple, tight, black, jumpsuit with some pink boots. If you wanted to play it safe, you could wear black heels/boots instead.

Everyone knows that when you go to a casting call, you should wear all black and tight-fitting clothes to show off your figure. However, there are a couple ways you can go about adding some flare to your outfit to help you stand-out from everyone else.

What is a casting call?

A casting call is when you go into an agency and meet with the agent(s). They ask you questions about yourself and you can ask questions them questions about their agency.

There are a couple reasons why agencies have casting calls:

  • to see you in person
  • get a feel for your personality
  • to see if the agencies would like working with you
  • to see if your goals align with the agency’s goals

Casting calls are also a great opportunity to see if you want to sign with the agency.

What type of casting call?

Keep in mind that there are various types of casting calls and I’m focusing on model agency castings. But other ones include:

  • photoshoot castings
  • runway castings
  • acting castings
  • open calls

Before any casting call you go to, make sure you do your research. They might tell you exactly what they want you to wear and you should listen to it.

Typical outfit

This is the most common and safe way to dress for a casting.

A typical casting call outfit includes:

  • Black jeans/leggings
  • A tight, black, tank top
  • Black heels – they don’t need to be six-inch heels! Make sure you’re able to walk in them.
  • Hair should be behind your shoulders or tied up

Agencies prefer this look because it’s simple and lets them get a good look at you. Sometimes, keeping it simple is the best option and the way to go.

Add your personal style

Adding your own personal style to the typical casting outfit is a great way to step outside the box (slightly) and stand out from the other models.

Instead of wearing normal jeans and a tank top, you could wear:

  • A tight, black jumpsuit (like the one I’m wearing in the picture). This is a very flattering outfit on anyone.
  • Tight, faux leather pants.
  • Black tank top with that’s backless.
  • Different style tank tops (low cut, turtleneck tank top, low back, etc.)
  • Black jumpsuit with white trimming. This will make you look taller.
  • A mesh shirt/tank top with a bra underneath. This is sexy, but still appropriate for a casting. *Make sure the shirt is mesh and not fishnet or anything along those lines* Here’s an example:

Even though this shirt is see-through, it’s fashionable, sexy and it’s a great alternative to a plain black tank top.

You can get creative with different pieces of clothing, but if you’re trying to still be safe, I’d make sure to keep everything black and not flashy.

Make a statement

If you really want to stand out from everyone else, you can come in any outfit that you think looks great on you and that you feel confident in.

That being said, if you want a serious shot at getting signed to an agency, make sure that your ‘statement’ outfit is still appropriate for a casting call. Don’t wear a club dress and sky-high heels.

This can go either really well or really wrong depending on how far you stray from the traditional outfit. But if you’re confident that the outfit you choose is flattering and appropriate, go for it!

I know a few models who completely disregarded the traditional dress code for casting calls and dressed 100% in their own style and the agents loved it! As long as you feel confident in the outfit, then I’m sure you’ll make a good first impression.

Imagine having the confidence to go into an agency knowing that you’re breaking the social norm of what to wear!

Make-up

All models stress about how much make-up they should wear to casting.

Agencies want to see your face as natural as possible, so if you choose to wear make-up, keep it minimal. For example, don’t wear a bright colored lipstick or false eyelashes.

However, don’t feel like you have to go to a casting call without make-up on.

If you do decide to wear make-up, try to go for the ‘no make-up, make-up’ look. This includes a little concealer, some translucent powder and light mascara. I don’t recommend contouring your face or wearing a ton of blush.

If you have acne scars or want to cover your dark circles, then do it. I promise, the agents won’t care about that; even top models don’t have perfect skin!

Most models wear make-up to castings and no one ever says anything. Try not to overthink it. Just make sure you’re confident in whatever you decide to do.

Don’t wear this to a casting call

Here is a list of things you should never wear to a casting call:

  • Platform heels. This is a huge NO. I’ve seen girls wear platform heels to a runway casting, and they got yelled at in front of everyone. Don’t do it.
  • A ton of make-up; bright lipstick, eyeshadow, eyeliner, filled in eyebrows, false lashes, heavy contour.
  • Bulky jewelry. You can wear jewelry, just make sure it’s simple and not overpowering.
  • Super baggy clothes. The agents want to see your body.
  • Patterned clothes or clothes with a huge logo/quote.

Personality

This is your chance to show the agent(s) what your personality is! This is an advantage over submitting applications online.

Be nice, respectful and try to show the agents why they should choose you to be part of their agency.

Wrap-up

The most important thing to keep in mind for all of these outfits is that you should feel confident in what you’re wearing. If you love your outfit and would wear it out on any other day, that’s a good sign.

Find clothes that are flattering on your body. If you have a pair of black jeans, but they’re not flattering on you or they’re uncomfortable, go out and buy another pair, or maybe find a pair of leggings or even a full-length black jumpsuit!

Feel free to add your own personal touch to whatever you wear.
